Project Description
This comic is a graphic memoir about me, my family, and the Alzheimer’s disease of my grandma, who I call Waipo. I created this story not only to remember my grandma before and after the diagnosis, but also to record the transformation my family and I went through to recreate a relationship with her. Alzheimer’s disease can be associated with the inevitable consequences of aging and is therefore often neglected within the patient’s family until it’s too late. However, even after diagnosis, patients can still experience a fulfilling life if provided the appropriate guidance and support. This project aims to raise awareness of the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease, and introduce practices to reduce risks of Alzheimer’s symptoms through a powerful and engaging family story. Additionally, I hope to evoke empathy in the readers, and encourage them to stay open-minded and hopeful if they have family member(s) with Alzheimer’s.
