Project Description

Functional protein-coding small open reading frames (smORFs) are emerging as an important class of genes, but the number of translated smORFs in the human genome is unclear. This cover illustration accompanies a paper by Thomas F. Martinez et al. on combining de novo transcriptome assembly and ribosome profiling to illuminate the existence of thousands of previously unannotated smORFs that encode microproteins. The image was selected as the cover for the April 2020 issue of Nature Chemical Biology.
