Project Description
At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020, Mount Sinai needed a tool to easily screen Hard of Hearing and Deaf patients, who could not always answer screening questions asked orally. This guide was distributed to all doctor’s offices and clinical sites within the health system, so it needed to be easy to reproduce and fit onto a letter-sized piece of paper. I therefore designed this black and white guide using a simple layout that includes only the essential information. I worked with the Patient Education and Interpretive Services Departments, who provided text for the captions using language that is easily understood by this population. The main challenge was to depict COVID-19 symptoms, length of illness, and exposure using images with minimal text. I drew people of different ages, races, and genders to accurately represent the Mount Sinai patient community.
