The evolution of care for the patient with cleft lip and palate will review historical perspective, timeline for provision of care, and the burden of care. The historical perspective will emphasize the interdisciplinary team approach, the Standards of Care developed by the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association, and the burden of care as seen through the tool of the Treatment Timeline cleft lip and palate.
Patricia Beals, DMD is a Medical Director for the Barrow Cleft and Craniofacial Center where she also serves as Craniofacial Orthodontist. Dr. Beals is the 2020 President of the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association. Her path to craniofacial orthodontics was non-traditional. After having two children, she began college part-time at 27 years of age. She completed her residency at age 40. She is a graduate of Muhlenberg College, University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, and Temple University School of Dentistry. She is driven by a great responsibility to positively affect patient’s lives beyond their treatment needs and she is unwavering in her belief that the interdisciplinary approach to cleft and craniofacial care, which involves the family, produces the best possible result.
