Project Description
After spending ten weeks observing surgeries at University Hospitals in Cleveland OH, the student was to choose one procedure and create a surgical plate breaking down the process into 3-5 steps. The student was encouraged to consult several forms of research including: direct observation and sketches made during the operation, information gathered from the surgical team, academic resources (print and internet) and anatomical atlases. The student was to draw on multiple rendering techniques and combine them to create a cohesive piece that orients the viewer to important structures and clearly illustrates the actions being performed. For this parotidectomy, the surgeon must pay careful attention to the location of the facial nerve and its branches, which pass through the parotid gland. The nerve must be carefully dissected as the gland is removed. The intended audience is physicians, and this piece is specifically formatted for use in a surgical atlas.
