Project Description

The purpose of this illustration is to showcase a new technique of tissue engineered vascular grafts (TEVG) which are superior to other options for pediatric congenital heart patients. The most important aspect of this new method is the graft’s growth capacity.  This illustration focused, primarily, on the newest aspects of this grafting technique; the development of the graft and the process by which the biodegradable scaffold is replaced with native body cells.

Unlike conventional grafts, TEVG patients do not require immunosuppression or anti-rejection medications because the grafts are made up of the patient’s own cells. As the child grows, the graft grows along with them thereby decreasing the number of follow-up surgeries needed.

Pediatrics Nationwide is biannual peer-to-peer journal that is published both in print and online by Nationwide Children’s Hospital to advance the conversation on child health. The audience is primarily Physicians and medical researchers.
