Project Description

This medical legal visualization is intended to support expert testimony for the plaintiff in a medical malpractice case (Miller v. Dow). The visualization demonstrates how important fetal electrode monitoring is in accurately detecting fetal distress by elucidating the relationship between fetal heart rate, fetal oxygen supply and intrauterine pressure; the visualization also emphasizes the simplicity of the monitoring and the need for it during Susan Miller’s labour. Ultimately, this visualization clarifies the plaintiff’s argument that the lack of monitoring resulted in the failure to detect fetal distress, leading to hypoxic ischemia and irreversable brain damage for the baby. The complex medical concepts and high-level obstetric physiological relationships illuminated in this medical legal illustration provide necessary visual explanations to scaffold knowledge building and deep understanding – to educate the judge and jurors and support informed decision-making.
