Project Description
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a diabetic complication which can lead to vision impairment and eventually blindness. DR is caused by an accumulation of by-products due to damaged retinal blood vessels. There are two grades of DR, non-proliferative, where the damage is limited to leaky vessels, and proliferative, where damage leads to new vessel growth. This piece was intended for a two-page spread in a popular science magazine targeted towards a lay audience with a scientific interest. Its goal is to explain different grades of DR, depict the causes and consequences of vascular damage, and bring the viewer “inside” a high-definition retinal image.
