Project Description

The Gene Doctors is a feature-length film documenting the personal stories of families affected by inherited diseases and the researchers leading treatment efforts. The film aims to clearly present foundational science concepts while conveying the emotional impact on each family. These diverse storytelling needs led us to create clips in two styles: 1) 3D visualization used for immersive biological journeys; 2) Hand-drawn animation used to explain concepts and processes. All content was extensively researched, with the form and motion of molecules and cellular details informed by published research. The clips were vetted for accuracy by a panel of experts and evaluated by the filmmakers to hone storytelling and collaboratively craft a signature look and feel. The results are dynamic visualizations that showcase incredible molecular processes for a non-scientist audience and allow both fleeting molecular interactions and long experimental workflows, to be memorably communicated in film.
